Section A: Purpose. The purpose of this Code of Ethics shall be to
maintain at all times a standard of excellence in ownership, exhibiting,
breeding and sale of Toy Dogs. Disreputable or uninformed breeders may
by improper practices, produce poor specimens, , physical or mental, to
the detriment of the Toy breeds as a whole. It is mandatory that a code
of ethics be subscribed to by those who are concerned with the
propagation of sound dogs of proper breed type. Measures should be taken
to acquaint the general public with the contents of this Code of Ethics
so that they may not be innocent partners of improper breeding
practices.
Section B. Records. If I breed my bitch, or use my stud in service, I
agree to keep accurate records of stock, matings, and pedigrees and to
register my breeding stock with the American Kennel Club.
Section C. Breeding. I agree to use for breeding only those dogs
which are breed type, sound, and only AKC registered dogs and bitches
(unless I own a breed not recognized by AKC, in which case I agree to
adhere to the regulating authority for that breed). The emphasis shall
be placed upon maintaining the soundness temperament, and other
outstanding qualities of character of this breed, as well as upon
appearance. I understand and agree that to breed inadvisably may lead to
over-population and contribute materially to the deterioration of my
breed. As owner of a bitch, I will breed only normal, healthy (disease)
free mature bitches according to the recognized standards of good canine
husbandry. I will cull seriously deformed puppies. As owner of the stud,
I will breed only normal, health (disease free) dogs who are registered
with the AKC or other acceptable registries. I will refuse stud service
to any bitch who has disqualifying and/or major faults, or which I
consider to be in poor health, or who has not been screened for genetic
disorders which may be so detected in my breed. When a bitch has filed
to conceive after being bred to one of my studs, I will, at a minimum,
allow one repeat stud service, at such time and place as are mutually
agreed to by the owner of the bitch and me, provided that the dog is
still in good health and available. I agree that I will not use any dog
for breeding who has major faults in that breed.
I
will discourage bitch owners form breeding unless they have the
facilities time, and resources to adequately care for a litter. IU will
refuse stud service to any bitches to whose owners I know or suspect
might wholesale their litters or any individual dog. I will not offer
stud service as a prize in any name.
Section D. Health. I agree to maintain good standards of health care
for my dogs, including proper veterinary care. I agree to provide for my
dogs at all ages, regular contact with people and exposure to the
outside world for proper socialization.
Section E. Sales. I will refuse to sell to, or recommended breeders
who do not conform to this Code of Ethics, or to dog wholesalers and
retailers and other commercial sources of distribution. I will not
donate a puppy or dog fro raffle purposes or sell to any home if I have
reason to believe that the puppy or dog will not be properly cared for.
Any
puppy or adult dog showing a serious deviation from my breed standard,
rendering it unsuitable for breeding shall be sold with a limited
registration or without papers. This shall be clearly understood by the
buyer and the breeder shall have signed a statement to the effect that
the dog shall be neutered or spayed.
We,
as breeders, agree to state in our sales contract that we will accept
back any dog we sell for any reason at any time.
I
will use a sales contract or other written agreement with any sale
involving a dog. To the best of my ability, I will state clearly to a
buyer whether the puppy or dog being sold is potentially a show or pet
type. Preferably, I will not release puppies before they are 12 weeks
old, and in no event will I release a puppy under 10 weeks of age.
Puppies will only be released with full knowledge that they are healthy
and have had the required medical inoculations.
I
will give buyers of puppies and dogs accurate health, breeding and AKC
registration papers (unless the puppy is specifically sold without
papers) and at least a three generation pedigree. I will adhere to the
terms of my sales agreement or written contract with buyer.
Following the general practice of breeders, any puppy sold that is no
tin sound health as determined by a licensed veterinarian must be
returned uninjured within 48 to 72 hours for a full refund. I
shall insure that my dogs and bitches always carry some recognized means
of identification.
Section F. Advertising. I agree that my advertising, oral or written,
shall be factual and not worded so as to attract wholesale buyers, shall
not be advertised as AKC show quality under six months of age, nor to
encourage the raising of purebred dogs as an easy money maker.
Section G. Sportsmanship. I shall conduct myself at all times in a
manner which will reflect credit on me, the Club, and the breed,
regardless of location or circumstances, but especially when attending
dog shows as an exhibiygor, spectator, judge, or agent.
Section H. Enforcement. Violation of any provision of this Code of
Ethics shall be handled in accordance with the Club’s Bylaw provisions
related to discipline.
